Deck: The Royal Fez Moroccan Tarot

Description: [Tarot, Playing Cards] The Royal Fez Moroccan Tarot. Rigel Press, Ltd.: London, 1970. Rare, 1st edition, "22 Grand Arcana|56 Minor Arcana with a table of Qabbalistic attributions referring to the Tree of Life. The designs said to be derived from a 13th-century Moroccan fortune-telling pack. This pack edition is limited to 500 copies, of which this is number (?)87." Due to water damage, the original number is obscured, perhaps 87, 287, or 387.

According to Stuart Kaplan, the deck was conceived by Roland Berrill, who commissioned the artwork from Michael Hobdell. The cards’ imagery apparently reflects Berrill's belief that the tarot had its origins in 13th-century Moroccan secret societies. Most commentators, however, have observed that the designs owe much to the Waite-Smith deck.
